BCE was contracted to assist the Client in decision making at the 35% of the design development stage. The Client intended to replace the existing pedestrian bridge that provides access to the Refuge over the railroad right-of-way. The goals for this VE study were to identify component and planning alternatives that may offer first cost or life cycle cost benefits and/or improve project quality. The bridge design proposes cast-in-place concrete construction for bridge supports, 50-foot deep
cast-in-place steel girders, and metal deck with poured-in-place concrete slab. Value Engineering team revised proposed design and provided its conclusions and recommendations, defined better feasible design alternatives and options, facilitated construction, and improved the bridge design.
